MFF2014: April 26 & 27, 2014

If you would like to enter a film to our film festival then you are in luck. The criteria for a filmmaker is probably the simplest of all. It allows for creativity. For one, there is no charge to enter a film into the festival. There is no limit to the brand or make of mobile phone used as long as the manufacturer classifies it as a mobile phone (smart or cell) and the video looks decent on the big screen. Most HD video cameras on most phones today will suffice. If you would like the ultimate in mobile phone video cameras you can do some research, but also look into 4K camera phones that are coming out this year.  Read this article that we took part in about the 4K video camera phones.

When it comes to mobile filmmaking there are options. We focus on phones because that is what everyone has in their pocket. The technology of mobile phones is getting so good that recently, new sales of new phones are going down due to people wanting to keep their current phones and avoid updating their carrier service contracts.  That is good news for all consumers…being happy with their phones. So what about letting your “happy” phone make you a star?

MFF2013 Red Carpet

MFF2013: Some of the filmmakers on the red carpet.

The International Mobil Film Festival™ is part of a Mobile Film Resource Center available to the world but centered in San Diego, home of Qualcomm. It only makes sense that San Diego is going to be a leader in this innovative new way to film!

Susy Botello, the founder of the festival had the idea and realized the vision of the future includes a parallel to the film industry with mobile filmmaking. She remembers the impression she got while watching a late night news report from 2002. It was during the time the U.S. declared a war with Iraq. The thick oil smoke would not let the transmission reach the “bird” to broadcast the story. So the reporter stated the camera person was using their cell phone to get the story out via video stream.

“I thought the future was going to embrace it and it would not take long. To my surprise in 2005 and 2006, reporters still used expensive equipment that was not mobile.”

A desire to encourage it by creating an online film festival quickly dissipated since the internet was behind on video and we were just moving into flash video technology which was still complicated for most people. It just was not feasible and a film festival has benefits in its traditional form. That is with filmmakers attending, presenting, walking the red carpet and networking, among other things.

When the iPhone 4 came out with its HD capable video camera, it was a calling to everyone who had ever even humored the idea.

We embrace everyone to enter our film festival. All ages are welcome. But what if you are not a filmmaker or have even studied it? There is a solution for that! Everyone qualifies. Rules are simple. We actually don’t allow you to use things that could get you in trouble with copyright laws. We encourage creativity. We don’t limit anything about your filmmaking other than using a camera on a phone to shoot with and no apps that make the editing decisions for you.

Music videos, community stories and documentaries, news and journalism, cinematic films, animation, time lapse, creative and experimental films…and more are welcome. Let yourself imagine and let your dreams inspire you.

The event is going to be perfect for the entire public to attend. This year we are featuring film festivals like ours from around the world as well as our competition. The world of mobile filmmaking is here in San Diego. Our featured partners are from New Zealand, Macedonia, South Korea & Spain.

We hope to inspire you to make your own mobile film. You can purchase your tickets now to attend the film festival in April and support filmmakers here.
